Good question!
I have to admit another Pinterest discovery but I think, a good one. This method intrigued me greatly because it flies in the face of everything I thought about cleaning my face. Oil on my face, really? Isn't oil what I am trying to remove? Doesn't oil carry the dirt? Doesn't oil clog pores which cause acne?
Yes, all true. But what companies fail to tell us or rather explain to us is this, while their products do remove the oil and dirt from our faces, they remove ALL the oil both good and bad. It is the removal of all the oils that makes our faces feel dry. This dry feeling leads for our need to moisturize (of course, companies want us to follow up with their moisturizers lol) and the vicious cycle continues.
My results were always the same with varying degrees if success. I'd follow a skin routine and my skin would clear for a while, but for me, it was always temporary. The acne always returned no matter how much I cleaned, moisturized or how much $$ I spent on products.
This cycle is what encouraged me to look elsewhere. I wanted to find a more natural cost effective way to do the job. Plus I am running out of room for face washes and creams. (literally) I also should add that my acne was never horrible and rarely painful. It was usually around that time of the month and usually on my chin and cheek area.
So, while searching Pinterest, I came across the Oil Cleansing Method or OCM as it's referred. Remember a long time ago in science class when we learned that like dissolves like? Well, the OCM follows this law oil dissolves oil.
Here is a detailed philosophical explanation of how it works Oil Cleaning Method Explained.
Now you have the idea here is what I decided to do...
I read that these oils can cause problems so I made an executive decision to take the advice of others and skip them entirely....they may work for you and that's great! Just not for me.
Off I went to Vitamin World to get my oils. I chose to start with 80% grape seed oil and 20%
castor oil. However, I just realized these oils can be easily found at your local supermarket or Trader Joe's for less $$$. Oh well..
Mixed up my oils and gave it a whirl.
This was a week ago.
Well, first off, I love the way that my face feels. It's softer..Yeah.. I am breaking out a little but I sorta expected this as part of getting over the hump to a naturally clean face.
The 80/20 mixture is a bit too drying for my liking so, I will be changing the mixture until I find the right combination for my face. You will probably do have to do the same. No biggy...
I am going to up the grape seed oil to 90% and the castor to 10%. I'll let you know how it's working for me. Until then I have been using some vitamin E oil on my face as a moisturizer until I can get low enough to add more grape seed oil. ( I don't want to waste it!)
Have you tried OCM? How's it working for you? Do you have any tips to share? I'd love to hear from you!!!
